A breaker that trips once in a while is normal. One that trips again and again is your electrical system telling you something’s wrong. Here’s what’s usually behind it.
1. An overloaded circuit
The most common cause. Too many devices drawing power on one circuit — space heaters, hair dryers, and microwaves are frequent culprits. Move some devices to another circuit and see if it stops.
2. A short circuit
When a hot wire touches a neutral wire, a large current flows and the breaker trips instantly. This often shows up with a burning smell or scorch marks — and needs a professional.
3. A ground fault

4. A failing appliance
A specific appliance may be the problem. Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, then reconnect items one at a time to find the culprit.
5. A worn-out breaker
Breakers wear out. If a circuit trips with little load and no other cause, the breaker itself may need replacing.
