Not all electrical panels are created equal. A few older brands have well-documented safety problems — and if one is in your Fremont home, it’s worth knowing.
Brands with known issues
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) / Stab-Lok — These panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip during an overload, a serious fire risk. Many electricians recommend replacing them.
Zinsco / Sylvania-Zinsco — Another older brand where breakers can fail to trip and buses can overheat. Replacement is commonly advised.
Pushmatic / Bulldog — Aging panels that lack modern safety features and can be hard to service.
Why it matters
A breaker’s entire job is to cut power before wiring overheats. When a panel can’t be trusted to do that reliably, the protection you’re counting on may not be there when it matters most.
How to check
Open your panel cover (or just the outer door) and look for the brand name. If you see one of the above — or you’re not sure — have it evaluated.
What to do if you have one
Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it. A licensed electrician can inspect the panel and recommend whether a panel upgrade is warranted. Modern panels are far safer and support today’s electrical demand.
